This may be kinda lame but oh well!
I’m an ER nurse at a hospital without a labor and delivery unit. But since we’re an emergency room we have to be able to take care of anyone and we are fully equipped to deliver babies if needed. It is very nerve-wracking though.
Any time we take care of a not-as-common patient we can earn a pin for our badge. There’s a brain pin if you give a clot-busting medication for a stroke within a certain time frame, a stork pin if you help deliver a baby, etc.
Welp, I helped deliver my first baby a few weeks ago! It was amazing. I loved it. I want to do it again!!! And…I really wanted my stork pin so I could selfishly show off. But I guess we were all out of them and my manager said they were more expensive than you’d think. So, oh well. I am just so thankful I even got the chance to do it because it’s one of those patients that just don’t come around very often. And the next time I have to do it I won’t be so nervous.
Yesterday a sweet coworker of mine handed me an envelope…and tucked inside was a stork pin. She said “I appreciate you as a nurse and I just think you should have one.” I didn’t work with her the day I had the baby patient so I have no idea how she knew I wanted one? I was honestly floored by her thoughtfulness and her recognition meant a lot to me.
I know it’s kinda silly to make a big deal about a pin but I just felt like I wanted to write this all out and put this strong feeling of gratitude out into the ether. It’s a small thing that will stick with me for a long time. 💜
