Is thinking that some people have it worse without trying to invoke an ego-boost gratitude?

I once read an article saying that gratitude should never involve comparisons and that if it does, you’re likely trying to counter envy with pride. But I’ve found that as long as I’m not feeling envious or insecure about something, comparisons don’t necessarily feel fake or like toxic positivity to me. In fact without them, sometimes it’s hard for the thing in question to feel meaningful. As in “I’m grateful for X” can be hard if I don’t have a reason why I should be grateful for it or evidence that life is that bad without it.
