I’m grateful for sobriety.
This weekend I went on a walk with my cousin. He has been sober for 8 years. I learned recently he doesn't come around the family much because he worries they will put him at risk of relapse. I don't come around the family for other reasons. He recently asked to find some hiking/walking buddies and I jumped at the chance.
We walked for two hours. It was 90+ degrees and miserably humid, but I hadn't realized until we were done. We talked about work, family, relationships and our journey to be better people.
I've been thinking about how addiction has splintered my family. How it took away normalcy in my life.
But in that walk I got a chance to feel normal. I love my cousin and I'm so proud of his strength. I'm so grateful for his sobriety.
