I’m grateful to adopt a new strategy for getting over things quickly by self-announcing, “I’m going to vent about XYZ for a minute and then change the subject.”
I've held onto disappoints for years, even decades, without realizing all it takes is a simple technique to draw a line and move on. I'm beyond pleased at how well it works.
Essentially, one day I decided I don't want to be upset about anything. Carrying weight is just that… weight. So, when something discomfiting happens I go with a method of PRE-ANNOUNCING that I will vent for a short bit and then think about something else.
Also, I've always like James Lovell's approach when Apollo 13 had an oxygen tank explode. He said they could have bounced off of walls being upset for ten minutes or they could immediately start seeking a solution.
