My dad never said ‘I love you’ growing up… but today, he showed me in his own way, and I just wanted to say thank you.
I grew up in a very reserved household. My dad was the “provider” type — always working, always quiet. He never really said "I love you," and while I always knew he cared, a part of me wondered what it would be like to have one of those warm, emotionally expressive relationships.
Fast forward to today — I had an absolutely awful week: anxiety, job stress, relationship stuff — just heavy. I went to visit my parents for dinner, and while I was helping clear the table, my dad handed me a small envelope.
Inside was a handwritten note. No occasion. Just a short message that said "I see how hard you’re trying. I’m proud of the person you’ve become.”
I cried in the car on the way home. I didn’t know how much I needed to hear that.
So today, I’m grateful. Grateful for growth — his and mine. For quiet love. For words that take 30 years to arrive but land right on time.
Thank you, Dad.
